remember MH370 ?

A Startlingly Simple Theory About the Missing Malaysia Airlines Jet

Image: Pedro Moura Pinheiro/Flickr
Image: Pedro Moura Pinheiro/Flickr
There has been a lot of speculation about Malaysia Airlines Flight 370. Terrorism, hijacking, meteors. I cannot believe the analysis on CNN; it’s almost disturbing. I tend to look for a simpler explanation, and I find it with the 13,000-foot runway at Pulau Langkawi.
We know the story of MH370: A loaded Boeing 777 departs at midnight from Kuala Lampur, headed to Beijing. A hot night. A heavy aircraft. About an hour out, across the gulf toward Vietnam, the plane goes dark, meaning the transponder and secondary radar tracking go off. Two days later we hear reports that Malaysian military radar (which is a primary radar, meaning the plane is tracked by reflection rather than by transponder interrogation response) has tracked the plane on a southwesterly course back across the Malay Peninsula into the Strait of Malacca.
The left turn is the key here. Zaharie Ahmad Shah1 was a very experienced senior captain with 18,000 hours of flight time. We old pilots were drilled to know what is the closest airport of safe harbor while in cruise. Airports behind us, airports abeam us, and airports ahead of us. They’re always in our head. Always. If something happens, you don’t want to be thinking about what are you going to do–you already know what you are going to do. When I saw that left turn with a direct heading, I instinctively knew he was heading for an airport. He was taking a direct route to Palau Langkawi, a 13,000-foot airstrip with an approach over water and no obstacles. The captain did not turn back to Kuala Lampur because he knew he had 8,000-foot ridges to cross. He knew the terrain was friendlier toward Langkawi, which also was closer.
Take a look at this airport on Google Earth. The pilot did all the right things. He was confronted by some major event onboard that made him make an immediate turn to the closest, safest airport.
The loss of transponders and communications makes perfect sense in a fire.
When I heard this I immediately brought up Google Earth and searched for airports in proximity to the track toward the southwest.
For me, the loss of transponders and communications makes perfect sense in a fire. And there most likely was an electrical fire. In the case of a fire, the first response is to pull the main busses and restore circuits one by one until you have isolated the bad one. If they pulled the busses, the plane would go silent. It probably was a serious event and the flight crew was occupied with controlling the plane and trying to fight the fire. Aviate, navigate, and lastly, communicate is the mantra in such situations.
There are two types of fires. An electrical fire might not be as fast and furious, and there may or may not be incapacitating smoke. However there is the possibility, given the timeline, that there was an overheat on one of the front landing gear tires, it blew on takeoff and started slowly burning. Yes, this happens with underinflated tires. Remember: Heavy plane, hot night, sea level, long-run takeoff. There was a well known accident in Nigeria of a DC8 that had a landing gear fire on takeoff. Once going, a tire fire would produce horrific, incapacitating smoke. Yes, pilots have access to oxygen masks, but this is a no-no with fire. Most have access to a smoke hood with a filter, but this will last only a few minutes depending on the smoke level. (I used to carry one in my flight bag, and I still carry one in my briefcase when I fly.)
What I think happened is the flight crew was overcome by smoke and the plane continued on the heading, probably on George (autopilot), until it ran out of fuel or the fire destroyed the control surfaces and it crashed. You will find it along that route–looking elsewhere is pointless.
lang-660
Ongoing speculation of a hijacking and/or murder-suicide and that there was a flight engineer on board does not sway me in favor of foul play until I am presented with evidence of foul play.
We know there was a last voice transmission that, from a pilot’s point of view, was entirely normal. “Good night” is customary on a hand-off to a new air traffic control. The “good night” also strongly indicates to me that all was OK on the flight deck. Remember, there are many ways a pilot can communicate distress. A hijack code or even transponder code off by one digit would alert ATC that something was wrong. Every good pilot knows keying an SOS over the mike always is an option. Even three short clicks would raise an alert. So I conclude that at the point of voice transmission all was perceived as well on the flight deck by the pilots.
But things could have been in the process of going wrong, unknown to the pilots.
Evidently the ACARS went inoperative some time before. Disabling the ACARS is not easy, as pointed out. This leads me to believe more in an electrical problem or an electrical fire than a manual shutdown. I suggest the pilots probably were not aware ACARS was not transmitting.
As for the reports of altitude fluctuations, given that this was not transponder-generated data but primary radar at maybe 200 miles, the azimuth readings can be affected by a lot of atmospherics and I would not have high confidence in this being totally reliable. But let’s accept for a minute that the pilot may have ascended to 45,000 feet in a last-ditch effort to quell a fire by seeking the lowest level of oxygen. That is an acceptable scenario. At 45,000 feet, it would be tough to keep this aircraft stable, as the flight envelope is very narrow and loss of control in a stall is entirely possible. The aircraft is at the top of its operational ceiling. The reported rapid rates of descent could have been generated by a stall, followed by a recovery at 25,000 feet. The pilot may even have been diving to extinguish flames.
But going to 45,000 feet in a hijack scenario doesn’t make any good sense to me.
Regarding the additional flying time: On departing Kuala Lampur, Flight 370 would have had fuel for Beijing and an alternate destination, probably Shanghai, plus 45 minutes–say, 8 hours. Maybe more. He burned 20-25 percent in the first hour with takeoff and the climb to cruise. So when the turn was made toward Langkawi, he would have had six hours or more hours worth of fuel. This correlates nicely with the Inmarsat data pings being received until fuel exhaustion.
Fire in an aircraft demands one thing: Get the machine on the ground as soon as possible.
The now known continued flight until time to fuel exhaustion only confirms to me that the crew was incapacitated and the flight continued on deep into the south Indian ocean.
There is no point speculating further until more evidence surfaces, but in the meantime it serves no purpose to malign pilots who well may have been in a struggle to save this aircraft from a fire or other serious mechanical issue. Capt. Zaharie Ahmad Shah was a hero struggling with an impossible situation trying to get that plane to Langkawi. There is no doubt in my mind. That’s the reason for the turn and direct route. A hijacking would not have made that deliberate left turn with a direct heading for Langkawi. It probably would have weaved around a bit until the hijackers decided where they were taking it.
Surprisingly, none of the reporters, officials, or other pilots interviewed have looked at this from the pilot’s viewpoint: If something went wrong, where would he go? Thanks to Google Earth I spotted Langkawi in about 30 seconds, zoomed in and saw how long the runway was and I just instinctively knew this pilot knew this airport. He had probably flown there many times.
Fire in an aircraft demands one thing: Get the machine on the ground as soon as possible. There are two well-remembered experiences in my memory. The AirCanada DC9 which landed, I believe, in Columbus, Ohio in the 1980s. That pilot delayed descent and bypassed several airports. He didn’t instinctively know the closest airports. He got it on the ground eventually, but lost 30-odd souls. The 1998 crash of Swissair DC-10 off Nova Scotia was another example of heroic pilots. They were 15 minutes out of Halifax but the fire overcame them and they had to ditch in the ocean. They simply ran out of time. That fire incidentally started when the aircraft was about an hour out of Kennedy. Guess what? The transponders and communications were shut off as they pulled the busses.
Get on Google Earth and type in Pulau Langkawi and then look at it in relation to the radar track heading. Two plus two equals four. For me, that is the simple explanation why it turned and headed in that direction. Smart pilot. He just didn’t have the time.
Chris Goodfellow has 20 years experience as a Canadian Class-1 instrumented-rated pilot for multi-engine planes. His theory on what happened to MH370 first appeared on Google+. We’ve copyedited it with his permission.
1CORRECTION 9:40 a.m. Eastern 03/18/14: An editing error introduced a typo in Capt. Zaharie Ahmad Shah’s name.

fear is a beast

fear of fear is more fear than fear we fear. it is the apprehension which is more unbearable than the real tragedy. so face it . it is not as bad as u thought. and it will never be as grotesque as u imagine. becoz we have a peculiar magnification formula at work. fear gets magnified  as it approaches u .  the one just in front  appears the biggest. luckily once the distance turns zero or negative it shrinks . and that is how we beat it. and survive.  so face the problem and it will recede. or shrink to the size u can handle.  remember every problem is a beast. it will chase the one who runs away . and bow a little on eye contact . happy new year

universe expanding or collapsing ?

talking about the paradox of whether the universe is expanding or contracting, i too think it is  both. like the rings on a ring rotating on their circular axis. if u look from the top it will look like  infinite outward motion. if u look from the bottom u will see only the never ending collapse or churning inwards. if u r lucky to be at the center of the main ring u can see both motions. but only  if all the rings on the ring are in synchronous motion . moving out or in at the same time which is almost an impossibility. as a result what u see even if u stand at the center is the most chaotic scene of some parts of the universe moving out and many others moving in. given the constraint that we can only see or feel or be in only  a miniscule portion of the universe we will feel the universe expanding  at some time and contracting at some other time . time here means the allotment and  the  permission  to be present in , feel or observe or interact with in any manner, a small specified portion of the universe . god knows by whom.

if time isn't real why does it appear to exist ?

1. nothing is real but they all seem to exist. so does time.

2. growth in both positive and negative directions is one phenomenon which cannot be disassociated with time real or virtual. probably our perception is hard wired to see it that way.

3. time is probably a hierarchy with god at  the top. look at an amoeba and see how we feel superior on account of the much higher time allocated to us.

4. our concept of time  probably developed from our inability to comprehend anything absolute.  or is it the other way ? we can take in only comparisons or relative observations. we have no way to detect motion except relative to another body.

5. probably the time to worry about time has not come.  and if it ever comes and if we have time at that time ....

atheism .. again

1. science is not  the last word. science told us many wrong things and later said sorry. to very many questions science is still looking at the sky and beyond with open mouths.   science is that urge to search and search but with no chance of ever finding the truth the whole truth i mean. the feeling that we are getting  nearer to the destination is a self sustaining survival technique.  it helps. even mirage has its use.

2. atheism essentially is counter theism. if theism is +6 on a scale of 10 atheism is  -6. to sustain the  fight atheism  needs to use the  same weapons  the enemy use.  and it does. like  selective use and denial of reasoning , (  i heard an atheist friend say it has to be proved to believe but lack of proof is enough to disbelieve ) commitment bordering on fascism...

3. let us try zero faith for a change . leaving a lot of space on both sides  positive and negative . try it for sustainability. do u believe ? no. disbelieve ? no . this zero space is big enough to accommodate any. not only in faith but in life

is atheism any better than theism ?

@ hugh . atheism as i understand is not the absence of belief in god. it is the belief that god doesn't exist and that believing that god exists is wrong. atheism is a negative belief. that is why i say atheism  like theism demands blind devotion.
if atheism is zero belief in god i have no quarrel . in fact i am with you.  but the fact is that it is a strong negative belief.  and that is why like theism atheism too is unsustainable.

reasoning as you  know is the process of setting a relation between cause and effect. from  theory to incident. or vice  versa.  that is , for every incident we are trying to find and fit a theory , an explanation. now the problem is that we have a finite set of explanations which we are trying to fit into an infinite set of incidents. the biggest problem however is that the set of explanations which we are boasting off is limited in quality too.  it is derived  basically from our wisdom or accumulated knowledge. to cut it short , reasoning is not a scale with which we can measure every thing.

logic is a simple tool which we use for linking simple things . no one has ever claimed universal reach for  logic.

now for examples. how do we explain the origin of the universe ? neither theists nor atheists can help. is the universe running on weak force and strong force or some other force ? when a tiger kills a deer who is right and who is wrong ?

crux of the matter is that our ability to understand things is limited . by design. could even be divine intervention . who knows ? we are no different from the house fly which can not comprehend the existence of a window glass or the frog in the well who thinks the world is a ten feet wide circle filled with water. this is design deficiency.

so positive belief is ok . zero belief is ok . but  negative belief may  be too silly to be sustainable.

hunger in the schools

   hunger in the class room

hunger is not just a six letter word.

it is the scar deep inside.
it is the ache that goes on and on.
it is the void which never gets filled.
it is the scorn that never stops hurting.
it is the growl that any one can hear.
it is the curse that i bear on your behalf.

in the exam hall i blink and go blank
in the class room i doze off lest i faint.
in the playground i crouch to crush the cramps.
when i open the book it is to cover the tear drops.

if you want to feed my brain and not my stomach
if you want to give me books and not beans
if you want to teach me etiquette but not survival
if you want me to run and win on an empty stomach

i don't know when i will fall pulling you down

god is a gamer ... review

  blogadda   book review

      GOD  IS  A  GAMER

   by    Ravi  Subramanian

the best part is the climax. the fbi and the cbi
sit together and tie the knots in the long
rope to hang tanya, with professional handouts
from her lover varun. the team  replays the full
story with cuts and pastes and highlights
on the corner incidents. when the audience ,
accepting the moral inevitability of tanya
paying for her sins  gets up to move out,
the screen lights up again.

and that is a beauty. the epilogue tells us how we
have all been taken for the ride by varun the real
villain. all the characters are called back and
re examined. their contracts with varun are re read.
when they march out taking their wages in bitcoins to
play the video game mafia don we are back in the dark
in the real world where varuns roam  scotfree and tanyas
go to the gallows to appease the authorities. it is a
logical entailment that if a crime is committed then
someone should be punished.

the one reason for this book probably getting into the
best seller list is the ingenuity of varun. i have a
feeling that it is varun who thought up the whole story
and forced the author to write this book.

coming to the other highlights of the book, it is malavika's
murder that stands out as the best sub plot. with lower  limbs
turning rigid due to the effects of hemlock seeds which kill
by progressively paralysing body parts starting from the limbs
as it did to socrates 2500 years ago malavika stumbles over
the low parapet and falls to her death. even forensics
confirm suicide as hemlock poison does not turn up in such
examinations unless it is specifically tested for.

in contrast senator gillian's death is a tardy plot. and the
atm heist which takes up a large portion of the book is rather
overblown. computers all over the world blowing up due to
excess heat generated by continuous bitcoin mining which they
are bugged over the internet to do is also an example of
imagination gone wild and out of context.

as the title suggests gaming is the soul of the book. the details
are vivid and the lure is difficult to ignore. yet i did not turn
a gamer becoz though god is a gamer, he probably plays dice more
often. and in the latest throw he has probably assigned bitcoins
to me. i have already opened a vallet with blockchain.info .
if any of you feel like transferring a few bits ( it is one
millionth of a bitcoin current value of which is around 24,000
indian rupees ) to my wallet to help me continue this madness,
here is the address
        1H5wmFNQmW477j96B1kLxPYLAwy5kBHS16

before signing off, a few bad words to ward off the curse of
the soothsayer. the language though english is typically indian
which many natives may mistake for greek if not spanish. and a
good word to smooth the itch. sex scenes are sober and a welcome
change.

the final word.  an enchanting thriller for the new generation.
may be this book will take you out of the  video game addiction.
not by disgracing the game. but by offering better entertainment.
much better and less addictive for sure.

language is a beauty

language is a beauty. english is the queen.
the queen is english.

we call simple straight forward selfishness by
the name fundamentalism. we admire dirty cruelty
calling it fascism. we accept killers' psychology
by naming it terrorism.

ism is the in thing. we grant respectability to
anything by suffixing ism to it. extremism survives
becoz of its ism tag.

it is ok to play with words if the time is right.
but we started off when not much of it was left.
with a tweet on the shooting incident in kashmir.
when the army shot the car which did not stop
at a check post and killed two teenagers.

my friend tweeted 'had they been terrorists...'
i replied 'do not use this had been clause carelessly.
becoz the they could be you or me'. he retorted
'if you move carelessly in a sensitive area , you
run the risk ...'. i said 'you make the area where
they are destined to live sensitive and expect them
to love your shooting skill...'. he said 'people
deliberately cross the bullets' path and then
claim sympathy.'

i said 'this is a dangerous bend. drive
cautiously. becoz the very same words could be
borrowed by every speeding bullet and any
piercing knife.' he is yet to respond.

but i have decided to quit. i prefer to die
if kill is the only other option.

terrorism is an ism too. like counter
terrorism. and that probably is the schism
which we , they and us , refuse to address.

language is a beauty. the queen may be english.
but the king should be an indian. that is someone
from the indian subcontinent. a continent himself.

the kiss miss kiss enigma

kiss the miss or miss the kiss ? a difficult choice.
if you are at marine drive on the evening of nov 2nd.
never mind whether you are in front on the stage or
at the back among the audience. or in front of the
t v  in your drawing room. it is time to take the call
and cast your vote. NOTA excluded.

kiss and her cousins were private property so far.
hidden behind closed lips. held close to the heart
by arms crossed shoulder to shoulder. away from prying
eyes and clicking cameras, except, may be, the hidden
 webcams.

not any more. kiss is now in the public domain.in
hotels.on face book. and now in a sponsored programme.
at the marine drive ernakulam in the evening on
sunday the 2nd of november 2014. for all to see
and judge. and all of us are invited by default.

the current wave took roll when  moral police
vandalised a coffee shop in kozhikode. for allowing
consenting adults to give and take a few kisses
while people watched sipping coffee. self appointed
morality enforcers felt the country should have a moral
code. which should be imposed by any means including
violent interventions.

coffee enthusiasts took offense. how come a coffee den
is pulled down this easily.intellectuals took up the issue.
what will happen to tea shops and beer parlours tomorrow ?
the common man got involved. they wondered if it is the
first lesson of an intensive course on fascism.

and the campaign went viral. face book groups decided to
defy the morality mughals . with a hundred kisses in the
open. at marine drive. rest assured that none can pull
down the marine drive that easily.

decency fanatics are not keeping quiet . hell bent on
clearing this land of all indecencies real or imagined,
they are planning counter offensive. the stage is set.

and you and me have to take sides and make choices.
kiss the miss or miss the kiss . not an easy task.
but i have made up my mind becoz i got wind of the
real issue.

the crux of the problem is not the urge for indecent exposure
but  the inability to control the craze to look for it.
which is an indication of our stunted mental development.

so i am for your freedom to kiss and show public display of
affection wherever and whenever as long as i have my
freedom to look sideways and ignore the show.

Glass Cracks Below Tourists in Chicago Skydeck

In what could have been a nightmare come true, part of the glass floor in a viewing box high above Chicago cracked right below a group of California tourists. But it was apparently much less of a problem than it might have seemed.
Alejandro Garibay and his family were taking in the sights at Chicago's Willis Tower on Wednesday night. The tower's Skydeck, which opened in 2009, is on the 103rd floor, about 1,353 feet above Chicago's downtown.
Right before stepping on the glass, Garibay and his family were joking with Willis Tower staff about the safety and durability of the glass.
"They jokingly and confidently responded, 'It's unbreakable,' so we just went on," Garibay told the NBC affiliate station in Chicago.
While on the glass, Garibay heard cracking. He and his family told the staff, who directed them away from the glass box.

"When we pulled our phones to start recording and take pictures they asked us to leave right away," Garibay said.
A building spokesperson told the Chicago Sun-Times that it was the protective coating that cracked.
“Occasionally this happens, but that’s because we designed it this way,” he said. “Whatever happened last night is a result of the protective coating doing what it’s designed to."
The Skydeck, which provides panoramic views of the city, was open on Thursday.

മോഷ്ടിച്ചതാ

Write it Down!

After checking an elderly couple out, the doctor tells them that they were physically okay but might want to start writing things down and make notes to help them remember things, as their memory is getting worse. The couple thanked the doctor and left.

A few days later,  while watching TV, the old man got up from his chair and his wife asks, "Where are you going?"

He replies, "To the kitchen."

She asks, "Will you get me a bowl of ice cream?"

He replies, "Sure."

She then asks him, "Don't you think you should write it down so you can remember it?"

He says, "No, I can remember that."

She then says, "Well, I also would like some strawberries on top. You had better write that down cause I know you'll forget that."

He says, "I can remember that, you want a bowl of ice cream with strawberries."

She replies, "Well, I also would like whip cream on top. I know you will forget that so you better write it down."

With irritation in his voice, he says, "I don't need to write that down, I can remember that." He then fumes into the kitchen.

After about 20 minutes he returns from the kitchen and hands her a plate of bacon and eggs.

"You see?!?" his wife yells at him in rage, "You forgot the onions!"

find that restricitve clause

i did a primary search of the dtaa between india and germany.  the only thing  i found even vaguely resembling the restrictive clause is reproduced below.  how this can be interpreted in the context of black money and in favour of withholding names of  those who stash away black money in either country remains a mystery.

Article 26
EXCHANGE OF INFORMATION
1. The competent authorities of the Contracting States shall exchange such information as is
necessary for carrying out the provisions of this Agreement. Any information received by a
Contracting State shall be treated as secret in the same manner as information obtained under
the domestic laws of that State and shall be disclosed only to persons or authorities (including
courts and administrative bodies) involved in the assessment or collection of, the enforcement or
prosecution in respect of, or the determination of appeals in relation to, the taxes covered by this
Agreement. Such persons or authorities shall use the information only for such purposes. They
may disclose the information in public court proceedings or in judicial decisions.
2. In no case shall the provisions of paragraph 1 be construed so as to impose on a Contracting
State the obligation:
a. to carry out administrative measures at variance with the laws and administrative practice
of that or of the other Contracting State;
b. to supply information which is not obtainable under the laws or in the normal course of
the administration of that or of the other Contracting State;
c. to supply information which would disclose any trade, business, industrial, commercial or
professional secret or trade process, or information, the disclosure of which would be
contrary to public policy (order public)

black money goes blacker

voters of this country who supported modi wholeheartedly is not prepared to accept that some treaty international or otherwise is coming in the way of bringing back black money stashed away in foreign banks by politicians of all hues . any attempt to hide under some covenants in small print  in these sacrosanct agreements will only be seen as a repetition of the strategy adopted by the previous government . and it is bound to fail as the strategy is not even original.

and now the minister says first action and then names. which means no action and no need for revealing any names. or at least some names. that is if the government is smart. and this sort of smartness probably brought the previous govt down .

history has a tendency to repeat. but so soon is too soon.

drink water please...forwarded message

Kumar .
HEART ATTACKS AND WATER !

How many folks do you know who say they don't want to drink anything before going to bed because they'll have to get up during the night.

Heart Attack and Water - I never knew all of this! Interesting.......
Something else I didn't know ... I asked my Doctor why people need to urinate so much at night time. Answer from my Cardiac Doctor - Gravity holds water in the lower part of your body when you are upright (legs swell). When you lie down and the lower body (legs and etc) seeks level with the kidneys, it is then that the kidneys remove the water because it is easier. This then ties in with the last statement!

I knew you need your minimum water to help flush the toxins out of your body, but this was news to me. Correct time to drink water...
Very Important. From A Cardiac Specialist!

Drinking water at a certain time maximizes its effectiveness on the body
2 glasses of water after waking up - helps activate internal organs
1 glass of water 30 minutes before a meal - helps digestion
1 glass of water before taking a bath - helps lower blood pressure
1 glass of water before going to bed - avoids stroke or heart attack
I can also add to this... My Physician told me that water at bed time will also help prevent night time leg cramps. Your leg muscles are seeking hydration when they cramp and wake you up with a Charlie Horse.
Mayo Clinic Aspirin Dr. Virend Somers, is a Cardiologist from the Mayo Clinic, who is lead author of the report in the July 29, 2008 issue of the Journal of the American College of Cardiology.
Most heart attacks occur in the day, generally between 6 A.M. and noon. Having one during the night, when the heart should be most at rest, means that something unusual happened. Somers and his colleagues have been working for a decade to show that sleep apnea is to blame.
1. If you take an aspirin or a baby aspirin once a day, take it at night.
The reason: Aspirin has a 24-hour "half-life"; therefore, if most heart attacks happen in the wee hours of the morning, the Aspirin would be strongest in your system.
2. FYI, Aspirin lasts a really long time in your medicine chest, for years, (when it gets old, it smells like vinegar).
Please read on...
Something that we can do to help ourselves - nice to know. Bayer is making crystal aspirin to dissolve instantly on the tongue.
They work much faster than the tablets.
Why keep Aspirin by your bedside? It's about Heart Attacks.
There are other symptoms of a heart attack, besides the pain on the left arm. One must also be aware of an intense pain on the chin, as well as nausea and lots of sweating; however, these symptoms may also occur less frequently.
Note: There may be NO pain in the chest during a heart attack.
The majority of people (about 60%) who had a heart attack during their sleep did not wake up. However, if it occurs, the chest pain may wake you up from your deep sleep.
If that happens, immediately dissolve two aspirins in your mouth and swallow them with a bit of water.
Afterwards: - Call 911. - Phone a neighbor or a family member who lives very close by.- Say "heart attack!" - Say that you have taken 2 Aspirins.
Take a seat on a chair or sofa near the front door, and wait for their arrival and ...DO NOT LIE DOWN!

waiting for your response

as usual i went to a petrol bunk and asked for
full fill. they were not for it . they were recommending
a specific fill like say for rs 500, 1000 or even 5 litres,
10 litres or whatever. anything other than full tank .

but i insisted. lo and behold . my tank which can hold
a maximum of   22 litres  doesn't get enough even after
the meter crosses 24 litre mark.

i went to a bunk run directly by an oil company and
got my tank capacity confirmed. it is 21.5 litres,  22 litres
if you  wait long enough for the slow fill in the end.

i could do this becoz my car runs on gas too. i  can
wait for petrol or gas to be emptied fully before the
refill. for single fuel cars it is difficult to wait till
the tank is empty. so this loot goes almost unnoticed.

i tried with a different private pump. this time
with gas. same result. about 10% excess bill.

what do we do ?  reveal the names of pumps in this
column to start with ? and then mass complaints ?

waiting for your response.

our MOM their rejoinder

A large number of readers have complained about a recent editorial cartoon in The International New York Times, about India's foray into space exploration. The intent of the cartoonist, Heng Kim Song, was to highlight how space exploration is no longer the exclusive domain of rich, Western countries. Mr. Heng, who is based in Singapore, uses images and text - often in a provocative way - to make observations about international affairs. We apologize to readers who were offended by the choice of images in this cartoon. Mr. Heng was in no way trying to impugn India, its government or its citizens. We appreciate that readers have shared their feedback, which we welcome. — Andrew Rosenthal, Editorial Page Editor

can we define god ?

in response to a challenge in
    philosophy network under linked in
       to define  god

the simplest definition is law giver. when humans started living together the need for rules arose. and the need for someone superior to design rules. so someone invented god and said all the rules that he is espousing was given by god and therefore should be obeyed.

a little more involved definition is emperor of the universe. he who controls the entire universe.
and probably who designed this world and is running it . and who will continue to manage the universe for ever.

a more personal definition of god is the guide and friend who leads me thru thick and thin and protects me from my difficulties , both physical and mental.

a philosophical definition of god is that inner conscience in every being   which helps one chose between right and wrong , life and death . the one which shapes the destiny of every being by residing inside the being.

a scientific definition of god probably is that software which runs the program called universe . self supporting self correcting self replicating and self evolving .

a practical definition of god is that phenomenon which we human beings or for that matter any beings are not empowered to understand, analyse or modify; which we are only allowed to view that too  in parts ; in small parts decided by the orbit in which one is destined to travel and the time slot which we are allowed to be in , at any given instant

book review PRIVATE INDIA

  PRIVATE  INDIA

  the new thriller by
    ashwin sanghi

the thing i like most about the book
is the craft . small sentnences , very
small chapters . 116 chapters, none longer
than 6 pages, spread over 444 pages is an
inviting format.

then those quote marks. they are there all over.
which means most of the book is in the form of
conversations. no long winding background
descriptions or stage settings. except on
very special occasions like the tower of
silence scene. it is direct interaction right
from start.

good but i have a suggestion. why not cut
out all those quotation marks .once the reader
absorbs the plot it is clear who is talking what.
there is no need to specifically mark them out.
thanx to the brilliant style.

the plot is the next best thing. meticulously
planned and tied up with near perfection.it has
all the ingredients mixed in the right proportion.
fit to fill a guide book for aspiring writers of
thrillers and chillers.

it starts with murders spread over entire mumbai.
then goes on to terrorists and their public life.
and of course the high tech private india team
finally catching up with them all.

it s all in the classic style. the villain coming
on stage early enough, but the readers missing him.
then the police chief turning out to be hand in
glove with the culprits.

and this is where i want to sound a jarring note.
rupesh, the police chief turned villain too soon.
his change over is not properly built up. yes,
his true nature is revealed in the torture of hari,
the private india executive. wherein he says i will
pass a current thru your testes, duration and the
ampere of which will depend on the time you take
to come up with a confession and the degree to which
it matches the draft that i have in my mind. he reveals
his sadistic bend of mind when he insists that the
interrogation of hari , who incidentally is his long
time friend, has to start with this compulsory torture
to imprint the experience firmly and permanently in
the victim's psyche. yet i feel the transition of
rupesh to that ruthless acoomplice of dreaded crime
syndicate is not properly built up.

but it is more than compensated in the build up of
the tower of silence climax where rupesh half alive
is eaten by the vultures starting with his still
blinking eyes. worth a nightmare of sorts or two.

then the man , woman , man again identity confusion
of the murderer is an interesting twist in the plot,
well developed and blended nicely into the main story.

now the most outstanding feature of this book. you can
use this fast paced action thriller as a tourist guide
of the great city of mumbai. the events are so
thoughtfully spaced across the entire city and the
scenes are so vividly , yet briefly , described that
you will recall and cherish the memories of your last
visit or plan the first visit straight away.

now to fall in line with the concept the last line of
a review should ideally be a negative one, i prefer
to cast doubt on the very name of the book. almost
any name other than private india would have better
kindled my initial interest in the book, of course,
not the enduring interest which even the current
name could not diminish.

well this is my first share of the thrill i got from
reading private india. when i get time to look up those
difficult but beautiful words scattered all over the
novel, probably a contribution of the english partner
author, i will attempt a more detailed review.

statutory warning. this book is unputdownable. start
reading it only if you have the time in one stretch.

our MOM and their meanness

from my friend parameswaran again

Subject: Fwd: Proud to be Indian

You may find the print of the article (quoted below) rather small to be inviting. But please do not I repeat do not skip  because of it. Do read and you will surely understand the mind-set of people. Meanness  knows no bounds indeed. You may go to the specific articles  also by clicking on them to know how low people can stoop. disgusting to put it mildly. If possible kindly share.

Y.P.

Balaji Viswanathan's write up
India has now successfully launched its mission to Mars. The mission was achieved at an extraordinary low price tag of $74 million - one-tenth of what a similar mission would cost NASA or ESA. If this successfully reaches Mars, India will be the first country to have the Mars mission succeed on the first try.
The provocation:
Just as quickly as the rocket sped off, Western journalists who marveled the moon walk in their childhood are engaging Indians in an unnecessary provocation. And these are not coming from cheap tabloids, but reputed media houses. It is not the criticism that rankles, but how crudely they are hitting below the belt.
This author chose to include poverty right in the headline: "India Mars Mission to Launch Amidst Overwhelming Poverty."
What a refreshing headline! Not even poverty. It has to be "overwhelming poverty". Who are we to launch into space? Should we not ask our British colonial masters before doing anything?
Apparently the other countries engaging in scientific research face no poverty. Apparently, space has something to do with poverty. Apparently, it is between funding Isro and solving poverty. You cannot do both. No sir, no. Next time, when you write about something that Britain did well, sure to remember to randomly incorporate the poverty of Birmingham and the riots of London into the title.
"England wins 10 Olympic golds amidst all the poverty"
"NASA begins its moon mission despite failing to manage hurricane relief"
"European Space Agency launches a satellite despite the inability to control religious riots in Paris and Tottenham, London".
This CNN author didn't even pretend to hide the racist idea:
For a country like Australia, the space aspirations are extremely pragmatically driven. On the other hand, a country like Malaysia is intent on putting astronauts in space -- that's very prestige-oriented.
Apparently, brown people's ambitions to reach space is not pragmatic enough. Apparently, the $75 million spent on the Mars mission is the only thing that keeps us from building toilets.
This gentleman at The Guardian makes a thinly-veiled threat: "ISRO to launch India's first spacecraft to Mars:  Critics of Britain's aid programme in the country have also been angered by the mission. The UK gives India around £300m each year."
Britain threatens to pull its aid. This is ghastly. What would India do without all these do-gooder British aid? The Indian economy of 1 trillion pounds was badly depending on these 300 million pounds that comes with no strings attached. We are an ungrateful bunch, aren't we? We are supposed to surrender our national priorities and research work and listen to our ex-colonial masters for a paltry 300 million.
This Economist article is more subtle and even more racist: How can poor countries afford space programmes?
What if the 16,000 scientists and engineers now working on space development were deployed instead to fix rotten sanitation?
Someone from Oxford wants to know why don't we all Indians work on toilets and potty research?
If this author lived at the time of Renaissance, s/he might have written:
Newton, Michelangelo and da Vinci are wasting time instead of building toilets. Poverty should indeed be an excuse to postpone great achievements. Right?
These achievements are the ones that are keeping our kids smiling and hopeful. This kid has an extra inspiration now. She has extra hope.
The double standards:
This event is monumental for us Indians. Imagine how the Americans felt when they first landed on moon. This is a landmark work for Indian scientists and I am filled with pride, just as the 1960s Americans were filled with pride as Armstrong made his stride. Sure, America had plenty of issues in 1969 - Vietnam war, civil rights, inflation, unemployment. But, those negative news could wait another day. It was time to enjoy the moon.
Actually, these commentators give a squat about India. They don't have any history of commenting on India's social needs. This is just outright racism clothed in a patronizing tone. To me they just look like sore losers and cry babies.
The cost:
Many of these journalists cribbing about the cost seem disconnected from India. We spent 450 crores on this mission. Let me put that in context. One of the local cricket teams - Mumbai Indians - alone is worth 1000 crores. Ambani built a home in Mumbai for 5000 crores. Every single day, Indians buy gold jewelry worth 1500 crores. An upcoming Bollywood movie (made about space) is costing over 500 crores. And finally, the Indian central government budget is 17 lakh crores (I actually rounded off this figure and that round-off error alone could fund 130 such missions).
India doesn't have more toilets, not because we don't have extra 450 crores, but because of our poor execution of things. Don't heap your blame on poor Isro for India's social conditions (ironically, a non-trivial portion of this poverty & hunger is due to the colonization under a power from where you are writing these articles).
Desi wannabes:
The Mangalyaan vessel: PTI
The Mangalyaan vessel: PTI
Not to be outdone by the firangis (foreigners), our Indian wannabes joined action:
Amidst euphoria, some voices question cost of Mars Mission
Social activist Harsh Mander termed the mission as a "remarkable indifference to the dignity" of the poor.
Arre! Poor are so hurt now, ouch because of some big words! Of course, when Mr. Mander teaches from an AC classroom at a business school or gives lectures from comfy podiums, the dignity of the poor is not so much hurt.
An ex-ISRO head was quoted extensively by everyone: "It is not value for money... It is more disturbing that somebody is making a claim that they are going to find presence of life on Mars. This is really moonshine."
Moonshine? Wow! Of course none of this bitterness and disgruntlement is due to him being an ex-employee who was expelled from ISRO after the S-band scam. He carries out an open war with the current Isro chief and of course we can expect him to be unbiased & honest in this issue.
Why India needs a Mars program:
It is exciting for children and teenagers, many of whom might take up a career in science, technology and research. These kids deserve an inspiration in the sky. If we can get a couple of hundred of these kids into hard sciences, the mission would have paid for itself completely.
Isro is already using the technology to help other countries put their equipment in space (for a lucrative fee, of course). If we continue to innovate in cost and speed, we could become a big hub for space projects. That would mean employment for 1000s of engineers and lot of foreign money.
India needs to prove its technological capabilities as it is building up the technology hub of the future - not just space, but everything. If you could launch a Mars mission at the cost of setting up ERP in an enterprise, you could build anything. There are both direct and intangible effects of this demonstration. This would really benefit India's tech companies. This is actually rocket science! Again more money.
India needs to spend on research to master the science of the future. NASA had plenty of spin-offs resulting out of its space program that advanced other fields such as medicine, apparel, food and navigation.
We could have made the "Model T" of spacecrafts - inexpensive and quick. The mission was completed in just 14 months and $75 million with little prior expertise. More importantly, the mission got off the ground on the first try. China, Japan and Russia have had to abort Mars missions in the past 2 decades due to launch failures. That is an outstanding engineering feat worth of salute.
Indians have always been fascinated by space since antiquity. Our ancient scientists spent all their lives looking at space. In the recent times, scientists such as Subramaniam Chandrashekar (Nobel laureate in astrophysics), SN Bose (Boson was named after him) have electrified the field. This mission is deeply fascinating even from a cultural perspective.
Imagine the potential for humanity if we could launch hundreds of inexpensive missions in our search for alternative life forms and alternative planets. Four years ago, India helped confirm that there is water on moon - the confirmation of which has eluded global researchers for five decades. This mission sent to detect methane could be the start of a new life for Indian science. Aryabatta andBhaskaracharya would be really proud of the lads who worked on this mission.
We need our Renaissance. We have to start breaking the chain of poverty by thinking outside the box. That would mean boldly assertive. People in other walks of life can surely draw inspiration from our scientists. This day is so refreshing although I have zero connection with anything Isro did. If we can reach Mars, we can do anything - from politics, arts to science & sports.
Outsiders have no idea of what this all means to Indians. Even a poor, hungry kid could dream for a Math Olympiad, can't she? In the same way, even a poor hungry nation can participate in a scientific mission, can't we?
We launched a peace project - not a bomb. We didn't go around fighting a poor country citing the presence of fake WMDs. We didn't build a vessel to conquer unsuspecting third worlders. We launched a mission to help humanity and the advancement of science. More importantly, we launched it with our money. We didn't ask for your money nor help. Who are you to patronise us this way?
These journalists are like the rich bullies who enter a poor man's house and mock at the books kept by the poor man - "You poor people can't afford to eat rich food and you can afford to buy more books?"
Yes, these journalists pretty much appear to me like those bullies.
